57 percent: That's the number of small businesses that plan to budget more time and money on developing their Web sites in 2010, according to an Ad-ology research study. The reason? Internet marketing reaches potential buyers and clients across the world - it's critical for a company's Web site to be up and running, as well as easily accessible.

Now more than ever, it's imperative that small business learn the best and most effective ways to put their Web site to work to gain an edge, and there's one sure-fire way to do that: search engine optimization (SEO)

"A small business owner needs to take advantage of every possible competitive advantage, especially during this challenging economy - and having an effective Web presence is one of the best strategies to increase sales," Stephen Woessner, UW-La Crosse Small Business Development Center Outreach Coordinator and author of The Small Business Owner's Handbook to Search Engine Optimization, said in an interview with the Search Engine Guide, a blog dedicated to improve small business owners' search marketing.

The strategy is simply something business owners cannot afford to miss, as it can make any business rise to the top of a Google - or mobile - search. But for the fledgling small-business owner, there might not be enough time in the day to effectively use all 15 steps, while still keeping your business booming. For those entrepreneurs, focus on the following tactics:

1. Select keywords that are proven performers. These keywords should meet two criteria: They are realistic and have a track record for already popping up in search engines. Limit these keywords to two per page.

2. Create custom page titles. The page title is the first thing Google collects from a Web site. To increase search rankings, incorporate your two keywords into these pages titles using your hosting server or writing your own HTML.

3. Create custom META keywords. Optimize these words to make content consistent with the page title you created. Simply copy the content from the corresponding page and drop into the META keyword field of your site.

4. Create custom META descriptions. Keep your META description to 23 words to avoid "keyword density" and be sure to use your two custom keywords in this description. This will increase the number of clicks to your Web site because users will see the keywords they searched in the description.
